This tumor, which originates from the cells that support the nerve cells in the brain tissue, can develop in the brain and spinal cord bulb. It can be detected in children and adults. These tumors can be low-grade, very slow-growing tumors, or they can be fast-growing, aggressive types. They may also start as low-grade and turn into aggressive types over time. One or more of different symptoms such as headache, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, weakness in arms and legs, seizures, and vision problems may be observed in children. It is important to remove tumor tissue at the earliest possible stage and increase the chance of survival with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, especially in high-grade astrocytomas. Personalized targeted treatments are also used in the highly aggressive type called glioblastoma.
